Helmet purchase discount at Ottawa retailers May 13 -14, 2017

on Mon, 04/17/2017 - 10:44

For a sixth straight year, Ottawa Public Health has partnered with sports retailers across Ottawa to bring Ottawa residents a discount on helmets.

Helmets prevent serious brain and head injuries by absorbing the force from a fall or hit to the head.

Helmets are recommended for activities like skateboarding, rollerblading, biking, sledding, skating skiing and snowboarding.

In Ontario, it is mandatory for anyone under the age of 18 to wear a certified helmet while riding a bicycle (Highway Traffic Act). Consider a cycling course in your community

Waste not want not: Sweden to give tax breaks for (bike) repairs

on Wed, 09/21/2016 - 00:10

The Swedish government is introducing tax breaks on repairs to everything from bicycles to washing machines so it will no longer make sense to throw out old or broken items and buy new ones.

“We believe that this could substantially lower the cost and so make it more rational economic behaviour to repair your goods"

Helping seniors, one bike ride at a time & Cycling without Age

on Sat, 09/17/2016 - 01:02

For those who missed it, the Bruyère Continuing Care unveiled a bike rickshaw program for seniors, which are pedalled by volunteers. Some of us at Recyclore have been exploring similar opportunities near Britannia Beach and along the Ottawa River Parkway multi-use pathways. This seems like a great service that would work in the west end. What do you think?

Time change, darkness, lights & safety

on Wed, 11/04/2015 - 11:36

Hans on the Bike wrote this week about the "Lights on Bikes" Citizens for Safe Cycling tradition of giving out (900!) bike lights this last weekend coinciding with the time change. This shines a light on safe cycling to and especially from work when sundown is so early. I usually pack bright white front and red back lights plus put both front and back lights on my helmet as a backup.

The new Road Safety Rules concerning bicycling in Ontario passed in September of 2015 require all bikes to have lights or front and rear reflectors or face fines of $110. Cyclists in the NCR, especially

Build your own bike patch kit

on Sun, 08/30/2015 - 13:23

I enjoy good reviews that save me time finding a high value produce that will provide good value and last. Occasionally I use TheSweetHome for home equipement and TheWirecutter sites for technology reviews. I see that they just updated the "Build a Bike Patch & Flat Kit" this week. Most of the recommended items are available from US sites like Amazon.com but many are available from Amazon.ca and locally from MEC and other local bike shops like Bushtukah or others.

This article is a great start but to find local parts I usually go to MEC in Westboro for the cheapest new parts. I like the

New amendments to Ontario Highway Traffic Act (& bike laws)

The new amendments to the Ontario Highway Traffic Act (HTA) have been passed and proclaimed and are effective Sept 1st. You have heard about the one meter passing requirement:
